Methi palak dhokla

These quick and easy to make dhoklas are best enjoyed as a breakfast dish or even a late afternoon snack. Black-eyed beans, also called cow peas or chawli beans are extremely rich in iron and folic acid. Both these nutrients are required in abundance, especially during the first trimester.

Soaking Time : 6 hours.
Cooking Time : 20 mins.
Preparation Time : 10 mins.

Serves. 4

1 cup black-eyed beans (chawli)
3/4 cup chopped spinach (palak)
3/4 cup chopped fenugreek (methi) leaves
2 tablespoons oil
1 tablespoon green chilliginger paste
11/2 teaspoons asafoetida (hing)
1 tablespoon Eno’s fruit salt
salt to taste
1. Wash and soak the beans for at least 6 hours. Drain.
2. Add approximately ¾ cup of water and blend in a liquidiser to make a smooth batter.
3. Add the spinach, fenugreek, oil, green chilli-ginger paste, asafoetida and salt and mix well into a batter.
4. Put the steamer on the gas and when the water in the steamer starts to boil, add the fruit salt into the batter and mix well.
5. Pour the batter into 3 greased thalis, put them in the steamer and steam for 8 to 10 minutes.
6. Serve hot with green chutney.
Add the fruit salt into the batter just before you are ready to steam the dhoklas, or the dhoklas will not rise.
Remember that the water in the steamer should be boiling when you put in the dhoklas to steam.
